Powers Tanis

Visual Artist: Painting

Columbia-based artist Powers Tanis has been painting since she was in elementary school. Growing up with landscape artist Miriam Mays, known to Powers as “Nanny,” she spent her summers in Maine painting the blueberry fields and rocky coasts and her winters in the Lowcountry of South Carolina taking in the colors of the marsh and creeks. As a visual arts major in college with a focus on landscape painting, Powers honed her technique and developed her brush strokes and color palette. A wife, mother and full-time marketing professional, Powers spends her nights and weekends diving into her paint palette. She leans towards abstract paintings in oil and acrylic, reveling in bursts of bright color and loosely created still lifes, landscapes and florals. With the sounds of Lauren Daigle, The Rolling Stones and Andra Day blaring, Powers gets lost in her paintings, using it as a time of grace, growth and healing. She also enjoys running, being outdoors and evenings on the porch with a glass of wine and her friends.

Peggy Thomas

Artist Statement I feel that an artist connects with a spiritual realm when he/she creates. I choose the one of good. I hope to reveal the beauty I see in each of us and around us. It is important to complete the circle. That is, an artist creates and when someone else becomes involved and receives fulfillment from that creation, the circle is complete. I began my art career in my early twenties, over 40 years ago, and participated in extensive juried fine art events around the country. I am also involved with galleries and commissions. My paintings begin with a detailed pencil drawing on the canvas. The process of applying at least 20 layers of paint begins. I use the white of the canvas, rarely using white paint. No mediums are ever used. A very time consuming technique that came natural to me. I do not consider my work to be strict realism, nor do I strive for that. I allow natural distortions to occur. At first I painted under Peggy Wells, then under Peggy Cacalano. Now I paint under Peggy Thomas to honor my Father, who made sure that my Brother & I attended at least one cultural event every week, which greatly influenced me. Henry Andrew Thomas

Henry Andrew Thomas is an artist who is aesthetically self taught, but who believes storytelling to be the foundation of every form of expression. In 2012, he graduated, cum laude, from The University of South Carolina with a BA in English Literature. In 2014, he was chosen as one of 100 artists out of over 4000 international entries to participate in The annual New York International Art Competition in Chelsea, NYC. He also won third place in the 2014 Rochester Erotic Arts Festival. He frequently exhibits throughout the East Coast; and in 2013, he received the People’s Choice Award for Contemporary Artist of the Year from the Columbia Museum of Art, in Columbia, SC. As the knife pierces, control, order, and rigidity are imposed on the fragile and malleable clay body. The obsessively repetitive process, tedious to some, is soothing and energizing. Like Yayoi Kusama, one of my major artistic influences, my repetitive process enables me to transcend mundanity in favor of, as Kusama puts it, “return[ing] to the infinite universe.” My delicate work and lacy patterns are also inspired by my grandmother’s embroidery and needlework. My grandmother, Beryl, earned her living by sewing and embroidering intricate patterns on dress clothing and decorative home textiles. I know a piece is done when I’ve pushed both the piece and my own patience to their limits. I hope my work recalls complex beauty of handmade lacework of the past like my grandmother’s needlework, while also communicating the great feeling of calm that can be found everywhere, even within chaos.

Ariel Tiana

Storyteller; Visual Artist: Photography

Born and raised in Southside Virginia, Ariel Tiana is a photographer and digital content creator currently based in Columbia, South Carolina. At a tender age, photography enabled Ariel to capture life and family moments—an experience that developed into a core belief: every person should have a portrait. Throughout the years she began to further her skill set and push her own creative boundaries by organizing and directing fashion and editorial inspired photoshoots. Her natural curiosity about human development and personal connection led Ariel to embark on an ongoing personal project, Converse and Connect—where she photographs, converses, and connects with people who are also creating their own way. From serving in the military to shaping small minds, Ariel’s experience working with diverse groups of people translates through her ability to help every person in front of her camera feel comfortable.

Gabor Toth

Choreographer; Dancer; Teacher / Instructor

Gabor Toth, co-owner, co-artistic director and founder of Southeastern School of Ballet, began his formal dance training at the world-renowned Hungarian Dance Academy in Budapest,Hungary. Toth is trained extensively in the arts of ballet, folk dance, acrobatics, stage dance, acting, historical dance,pantomime, partnering and contemporary dance. Upon graduation, he was awarded a scholarship to the School of Alicia Alonso in Madrid, Spain, where he received instruction in Spanish folk dance and classical ballet. Following this, Toth made his American debut as an intern with the Greensboro Ballet Company, where he perfected his knowledge of American techniques, styles and choreography. Toth has utilized his extensive knowledge of movement with some of the most accomplished dance companies in the world, including: Music World, a national dance festival and competition in Fivizzano, Italy performances in “Majismo” and “El Gran Baile” in Madrid, Spain “AIDA” in Budapest, Hungary In spring 2000 he came to Carolina Ballet to be in the premiere productions of Lynne Taylor-Corbett’s Cabaret. Lynne Taylor-Corbett is known for her work in theatre, ballet and film. She was nominated for Tony Awards for her direction and choreography of Broadways Swing! and for two American Theatre Wing Star Awards for its National Tour. She choreographed Chess and Titanic on Broadway and the feature films Footloose, My Blue Heaven and Vanilla Sky. Her ballets have been commissioned by New York City Ballet, American Ballet Theatre, Pacific Northwest Ballet, Pennsylvania Ballet. Toth’s experience includes professional productions of both contemporary and classical ballets. During his two-year stay as a dancer and instructor at Columbia Classical Ballet, Toth played a vital role in choreographing dance sequences for “The Nutcracker”, “Jekyll and Hyde” and “Lifechance”.

Leo Twiggs

Visual Artist: Painting

Leo Twiggs, from Orangeburg, is widely seen as the country’s main pioneer of batik as a modern art form. He is among the most important South Carolina artists since the 1960s. His art is about subjects, topics, issues and people close to his Southern upbringing. But through familiar specifics, Twiggs addresses broader themes, including race, black culture, politics and relationships between generations. He does so through modern imagery and narrative scenes that seldom are straightforward snapshots but abstracted, symbolic tableaus dominated by shapes, lines and fields of color. By the 1970s, Twiggs’ national reputation resulted in a several solo shows in the Northeast, including at New York’s Studio Museum in Harlem. He also has been in group shows featuring the country’s most famous African-American artists, including Jacob Lawrence and Romare Bearden. His career retrospective, organized by the Georgia Museum of Art, from 2004 to 2006 traveled to several venues, including the South Carolina State Museum. Twiggs’ work is in all prominent South Carolina museums, including the Greenville County Museum of Art. He was the first person to receive as an individual South Carolina’s highest art award, the Elizabeth O’Neil Verner Governor’s Award for the Arts.
