Application for Artist Space Downtown

One Columbia for Arts and Culture is offering studio space to working early career artists who want to be a part of a collaborative environment. Artists are selected through an application process and must maintain a commitment to working in their studios 20 hours a week and participate in select programming.  One Columbia’s commitment to the representation of historically marginalized communities is a core value in the selection process.

Requirements:
• Applicants must be 18+ years old

Artists must be local to the City of Columbia and have been a resident for at least one year prior to application or program participation.

• Artists must present one class, workshop or arts event at the space each month that is accessible to the general public.

• Artists must identify as emerging or early career.

What is an Emerging or Early Career Artist?

There is no exact or singular definition. The lack of a rigid definition leaves room for interpretation, but we have embraced this flexibility out of our recognition of the many variables that impact artists’ careers. We know that the number of opportunities afforded to artists may differ significantly based on discipline, race/ethnicity, class, gender, physical ability, and geography among other factors. We support artists who show significant potential yet are under-recognized. This may include artists who have less than 5 years of professional experience in their chosen artistic field; artists with only a few group exhibitions or small solo shows; or artists whose works are typically sold on the primary market, meaning that they arrive to collectors directly from the artist’s studio. An emerging artist is different than avocational, academic, amateur or educational artist. Age is not a determining factor.

Selection is based on:

• Meeting application requirements.

•  Willingness to lead a class, workshop or arts event each month in the space.

•  Readiness for program participation based on the Artist’s CV, Artist Statement, and work examples.

• Description of why the artist would like to be a part of the collective.
