The Brothers Size

COLUMBIA, S.C.—Trustus Theatre continues the 31st season with Tarell Alvin McCraney’s The Brothers Size, the second part of The Brothers/Sister Plays directed by Chad Henderson and running from October 16 through October 31.

Trustus produced the first of The Brothers/Sister Plays, In the Red and Brown Water, last season where main character, Oya, deals with becoming an adult and more importantly, a woman, in the projects of Louisiana.  Next in the trilogy, The Brothers Size examines the power of family, fight for survival, consequences of circumstance, the contradiction of incarceration and freedom and the deep roots of brotherhood. McCraney’s plays truly exploit the community’s low expectations and life’s toughest realities with a unique, mythological greatness.

When asked how The Brothers Size differentiates itself from past productions, Director Chad Henderson states, “The writing is what makes it different from other Trustus shows. McCraney’s voice is singular in the American Theatre and I’m thrilled that Columbia audiences are responding to this work with so much enthusiasm”. Henderson goes on to state that, “The cast is truly dynamic and they bring this unique world to life in a very moving way”.

 Expanding on the unique writing style of McCraney, characters will quite literally verbalize their stage cues before acting them out. These singular scripts allow the audience to first and foremost, find amusement, but secondly, dive deeper into the characterization and emotions of each individual.

Opening night for The Brothers Size is Friday, October 16 at 8:00 pm. Other shows are Saturday, October 17 at 8:00 pm, Sunday, October 18 at 3:00 pm, Thursday, October 22 at 7:30 pm, Friday, October 23 at 8:00 pm, Saturday, October 24 at 8:00 pm, Sunday, October 25 at 3:00 pm, Thursday, October 29 at 7:30 pm, Friday, October 30 at 8:00 pm, and Saturday October 31 at 8:00 pm.
