Reading by Hafizah A. Geter: The Black Period, On Personhood, Race, and Origin
Saturday, August 5
3 PM to 6 PM
701 Center for Contemporary Art
Join 701 CCA and Hafizah Augustus Geter for an intimate experience between artist and author, father and daughter, visual language and literature. Hafizah will be reading an excerpt from her award winning book, The Black Period in the center of Tyrone Geter’s work in progress, A Brave New World, in the gallery at 701 CCA. From the words of the author, her work explains the fusion between black art and living. After the reading, there will be a question and answer session where father and daughter will explain how writing and drawing are two different ways to tell the same story.
Hafizah Augustus Geter is a Nigerian-American poet, writer, and literary agent born in Zaria, Nigeria, and raised in Akron, Ohio, and Columbia, South Carolina. Her debut memoir, The Black Period: On Personhood, Race & Origin, (Random House, 2022) is winner of the 2023 PEN Open Book Award, winner of a 2023 Lammy Award in LGBTQ+ Nonfiction from Lambda Literary, a New Yorker Magazine Best Book of 2022, a Good Morning America Anticipated Book, an Amazon’s Best of the Month Editor’s Pick, and a finalist for the 2023 Chautauqua Prize.
After the reading and Q&A session, Hafizah will be available for book signing. Books will be available for sale during the event through All Good Books.
