PERSPECTIVE: BLACK LIVES MATTER

The short, smartphone video of the last minutes of George Floyd’s life, shot by a 17-year-old girl, was long enough to ignite protests against police violence toward black people – across the United States and internationally.
In the ongoing portrait and story of social freedom and equality, Columbia area photographers were on the street to capture the sorrow and anger of the protest, the civil unrest, and the calm that now demands reforms and pushes forward the long march of the Civil Rights movement.
In these photographs one sees the First Amendment of the US Constitution in play. In the release of the photographers’ shutter and the resulting images, one witnesses the outcry of a new generation, the critical moments – the perspective – that have created anew a patina of reckoning for the next era in Human Rights.
These photographers, both professional and amateur, followed the action and the human complaint despite the coronavirus pandemic, which has now infected close to 9.5 million people and killed approximately 480,000 worldwide. The number in South Carolina continues to rise with close to 27,000 cases.
We are ever thankful for the photographers who are driven to be “in the arena” and to bring back photographs that change our lives.
