Much More Than A Drum - Three-Day Workshop

This is a series of workshops which will utilize the gourd or calabash to hand craft numerous types of percussive and/or rattles, shakerie that are used in an ensemble or played along to accompany other voices or orchestration of music. Shakerie is a gourd with beads attached on the outside of the gourd in different patterns. A form of macrame tying of knots is used to make the sounds. The rattle is the use of beads or some object on the inside of the gourd to produce sound. The Gudu gudu is the use of a gourd attached with a thin skin to the groud creating a small hand drum. Workshop is for ages 12 through adult. August 10 workshop will create Shakerie; September 21 workshop will create rattle and October 12 Workshop will create Gudu. All classes run from 10 am to noon at the Columbia Art Center. Class size limited to 5 minimum and 20 maximum. One workshop is $55; Two workshops is $100 and three workshops is $155.
