Hyatt Park Mural Project

Visual artist, Charmaine Minniefield comes to the 2018 Grits Festival as a special guest of One Columbia to create a community mural in honor of the rich history and culture of the Hyatt Park Community. This mural is her next in a series of public artworks created in the Atlanta area which similarly highlighted the stories of changing communities. Minniefield, joins the festival planning team to engage the local arts scene and highlight this important area of Columbia.

Her most recent community project featured an over 4,000 sq ft mural on the Westside Trail of the Atlanta BeltLine which honored Adrienne McNeil Herndon, an artist and the first woman of color faculty at the Atlanta University at the turn of the century who’s husband was the founder of Atlanta Life Insurance, first African-American owned insurance company. The mural resides in the West End area near that Atlanta University Center, home to the Historically Black Colleges Spelman, Morehouse and Clark.

As an artist-in-residence, Minniefield will draw inspiration from the Hyatt Park Community connecting to residence and business owners in the area. She will then work on the mural with her team and volunteers leading up to the Grits Festival when the work will be unveiled during the opening events. She is joined by her colleague and team member Atlanta-based street artist, Sean Irving.
