COLUMBIA, SC—Saint Michael Lutheran Church, a congregation of the Evangelical Lutheran Church of America (ELCA), will host a dedication recital for their recently installed E. & G.G. Hook Pipe Organ, Opus 359—1865, at 2:00 pm on Saturday, November 19, 2022. The public is invited to attend. There will be a reception following the recital in the church fellowship hall.
William Douglas, Associate Organist, and Choirmaster at Trinity Episcopal Cathedral, Columbia, will be performing. William is a graduate of the University of South Carolina, where he earned a B.Mus. and M.M. in Organ Performance as a pupil of Dr. Jared Johnson. He also studied continuo and harpsichord with Dr. Jerry Curry. William was a recipient of the Summerall Award from USC. Most recently, he served as the Lloyd Cast Organ Fellow and sub-organist at Cathedral of All Saints – Albany, NY. Mr. Douglas is also a member of the Greater Columbia chapter of the American Organist Guild (AGO).
Pastor Frank W. Anderson spearheaded the acquisition of the historic pipe organ from Christ the King Lutheran Church upon its recent closure. The Lincoln Pipe Organ company from Lincolnton, North Carolina, accomplished the move and rebuilt this beautiful instrument in two weeks with the help of several friends. This instrument has significant historical value and has been meticulously maintained for over 150 years and boasts a colorful and multi-denominational journey to the Dutch Fork community.
Pastor Anderson and Cantor Karen Shevenell welcome the community to attend the dedication service and recital featuring this much beloved addition to the church’s worship and music program. Saint Michael celebrated its bicentennial in 2014, noting that the first Lutheran ecclesiastical meeting held in the state of South Carolina took place at Saint Michael on April 30, 1816. The South Carolina Synod was also founded at Saint Michael in 1824.
