  • This portion was a gift from to the Museum by Armistead Peter III (the artist's stepdaughter)
This piece is a replication of a portion of a larger piece - The Apotheosis of Democracy, which is the pediment on the US House of Representatives. The artist, Paul Wayland Bartlett was a sculptor from Connecticut. Originally created for the pediment of the House wing of the United States Capitol in Washington, D.C., this section is a later cast taken from this more extensive work. The figures within this particular group represent American achievement in agriculture, while a complimentary section was composed for industrial accomplishments. Following years of complications, Bartlett completed the commission in 1916. “[The CMA's] pieces from the House pediment are significant for they are among the very few bronze casts of figures from the House pediment in existence.” [From a 1995 letter from Thomas P. Somma, publishing a book called The Apotheosis of Democracy, 1908-1916: The Pediment for the House Wing of the United States Capitol Building.] This section comes from The Powers of Labor: Agriculture, northern portion of The Apotheosis of Democracy
