A bronze sculpture featuring a young woman playing with a lamb by artist Paul Silvestre, a French sculptor who died in 1976 at the age of 92.
Born in the city of Toulouse in 1884, Paul Silvestre remained dedicated to the classical traditions of France’s Ecole des Beaux Arts well into the 20th century La Jeunesse is one of a series of his mythological works that depict a youth or nymph with Pan, the goat-like ancient Greek god of pastures, flocks, and shepherds. Silvestre was awarded the Ecoles’ Prix de Rome in 1912.
This piece was a gift of Edwin G. Seibels, a native Columbian and businessman that invented the vertical filing system (filing cabinet) and served in the South Carolina House of Representatives in 1909. His family created an insurance company in 1869 and had business interests in the construction company that build the Palmetto Building (where the Sheraton is today).
