The Christopher Columbus statue was erected though the generosity of South Carolina State Society Daughters of the American Revolution. This gift to Columbia is a monument to stand in tribute to the courageous spirit of that Genoese mariner who challenged the unknown to discover this land, now the hope of the world and the haven of freedom for all.
Full-length figure of Christopher Columbus on rectangular base. He holds an ornate cross in his right hand and his left hand is outstretched, palm up. He wears a calf-length coat with decorative wrist and sleeve bands and a large wool-like collar. He wears slippers, a skirt and a decorative shirt. The figure faces the City of Columbia.
Sculpted by Stavros Alexander Chrysostomides (1923-2007), an American sculptor and Estelle Hampton Frierson, an American sculptor.
