The African American History Monument, the first of its kind on any of the nation's statehouse grounds, was designed to recapture the rich history of African Americans and their contributions to the state of South Carolina. Dedicated March 29, 2001. This piece was designed with twelve panels that symbolize the history and contribution of African Americans to South Carolina.
The African American Freedom Monument serves as more than a sculpture in that it has become an event space, enabling space for various events throughout the year. Additionally, the piece serves as a meeting place for many organizations whose missions focus on developing conversation and community programming that considers the dynamic lives of people of color.
Throughout the year, poetry, singing, political demonstrations and displays of visual art can be found happening at and around the African American Freedom Monument.
