Amore Under the Stars

Amore Under the Stars

Presented by South Carolina State Museum at South Carolina State Museum

The South Carolina State Museum will celebrate all things love and romance on Valentine’s Day, Wed., Feb 14, during Amore Under the Stars, from 6 until 9 p.m. Guests will experience the ultimate date night or solo Valentine’s fun with a DJ, champagne bar and souvenir flute, a romantic tour through museum galleries, a special Valentines themed planetarium show, a demonstration and class in Tango and Shag dancing and hands-on adult crafts and more.

Amore guests will relax under the stars in the BlueCross BlueShield of South Carolina Planetarium for Cosmic Love Stories, a special live performance of three love stories from Greek mythology involving heroism, betrayal and forbidden love and how their stories are immortalized in the skies above.

Amore attendees will also have the chance to see demonstrations and to participate in romantic dancing and free Tango and Shag lessons from Emerald Ballroom. Each attendee will go home with their very own souvenir champagne flute after they experiment with fun cocktails at the champagne bar. An array of delicious food and desserts will also be available for guests during the evening. And in the true spirit of Valentines’ day, guests will be able to make their own Valentine’s Day cards to share with loved ones and friends.

The museum will journey through the exhibit halls with guests and detail great love stories of South Carolina; including a quilt made by a once love-struck President Andrew Johnson and a bracelet worn by generations of brides in one family made of gold, pearl, and the hair of the first bride to wear it in 1854. Guests will also learn about unique wedding customs and their genesis and hear storytellers recount the thrilling folktale of the legendary Issaqueena, who risked her life to save her love in the colonial Carolina backcountry and the tragic tale of Lt. Dixon and the coin his lover gave him as good luck before leaving on the Hunley.

South Carolina’s First Astronaut Charles Duke and the Apollo Missions exhibit will close on February 18 to the public but guests of Amore will be able to tour the exhibit one last time and hear the touching love story of how General Duke made his family a very important part of his mission to the moon.

Tickets are $35 for general public and $28 for museum members. Tickets include all activities, souvenir champagne flute, food, beer and wine. Advance ticket purchase is recommended. Tickets and more information at scmuseum.org.
