The Spanish Program of the Department of Languages, Literatures & Cultures and the Office of Multicultural Students Affairs (OMSA) at University of South Carolina are pleased to invite you to the film screening of the documentary Las Libres: The Story Continues… (2014) directed by Gustavo Montaña and produced by Deborah Billings and Verónica Cruz Sánchez. The movie is in Spanish with English subtitles (duration 95 minutes).

Summary of Las Libres: The Story Continues…
Draconian state laws are systematically violating women’s rights in the state of Guanajuato, Mexico. Women are being sentenced to prison for 25 to 30 years for the ‘crime’ of abortion and miscarriage, but are charged with aggravated homicide of a blood relative. Many of these women were sent to prison without a fair trial and now, through a Mexican non-profit organization called Las Libres, they can tell their stories. In this documentary, the stories of Mexican women imprisoned for abortion and the activists working to free them are linked to broader sexual and reproductive rights struggles, grounded in basic human rights, in Argentina and the United States. Rights violations and movements to demand justice are shown to be a global phenomenon.
