Monday, December 4 – Home Alone

Join us for festivities including treats, a holiday sweater competition, and trivia!

Once criticized for being a “sadistic festival of adult-bashing,” writer John Hughes’ Christmas classic Home Alone explores our deepest childhood fantasy and fear: being alone. In one of the the highest grossing comedies of all time, hero Kevin McCallister (Macaulay Culkin) has free reign over his well-appointed suburban home when his family forgets to take him on their Parisian Christmas holiday. After a frolicking montage of junk-food eating, bed jumping, and television bingeing, Kevin matures and tries his hand at “adulting.” Now the de facto ruler of his family’s kingdom, he is forced to defend it against burglars, the scheming Harry (Joe Pesci) and bumbling Marv (Daniel Stern). Kevin lures the invaders through a John Williams’ scored, Rube Goldberg-esque maze of pain, treating us to physical goofs that satisfy our inner child’s longing to punish our own overbearing grown-ups. By the time the villains are conquered, we are ready for the sticky-sweet family reunion and welcome the final scenes like Christmas morning.

Sunday, December 10 – Little Women

Come early to sample baked goods inspired by Little Women!

A moving story of strength, fortitude, and sisterhood. Don’t miss this beloved adaptation of Louisa May Alcott’s classic novel – starring 90s icons Winona Ryder, Claire Danes and Kirsten Dunst as the fearless, imaginative March women. With their father away at war, prim Meg, wild Jo, kindhearted Beth and spirited (and sometimes selfish) Amy support each other, pursue education, seek careers, and find love, all while bucking 19th century restrictions on women’s comport. A wondrous tale of friendship and adventure, Little Women is a feminist story that remains as inspiring as it was when it was written in 1868.

One of Tim Burton’s most beloved, personal films. The story of a half-completed animated human whose strange, sharp exterior doesn’t match his gentle heart. One day an Avon Lady discovers Edward (Johnny Depp) in an abandoned gothic mansion and takes him into her pastel-suburbia town. As Edward tries to adapt to “normal” life, he finds himself falling in love with the daughter of his new family (played by Depp’s real-life girlfriend at the time Winona Ryder). While Edward and his new family try to use his strange appendages to win over the townspeople, his greatest challenges are no different from the average teen’s: high school bullies and crushes. The ultimate outsider story told with Burton’s characteristic flare.

Sunday, December 17 & Monday, December 18 – It’s a Wonderful Life

Do you really think we’d let a holiday season pass without the film in which the protagonist gleefully exclaims: “Merry Christmas, movie house!”?

Recreated, referenced, and parodied countless times over decades of pop culture, It’s a Wonderful Life is a celebration of human generosity and kindness. James Stewart brings the same same wide-eyed good intentions that epitomized his role in Mr. Smith Goes to Washington, to tell the story of George Bailey, a man who has lived his life deferring his dreams for the sake of others. A story of love, humor, wit and heartbreak, It’s a Wonderful Life follows George as he marries his sweetheart (the dazzling Donna Reed), advocates for affordable housing and combats the greed of the town’s cruel business leader Mr. Potter. A movie for anyone who likes their Holiday Season with a heavy helping of renewed hope and a sing -a-long ending of “Auld Lang Syne.”

Sunday, December 24 – Miracle on 34th Street

Come early for special holiday card making!

You can always count on a screening of the timeless holiday classic Miracle on 34th Street at the Nick during the Holidays.  It’s the cinematic equivalent of a hot cup of cocoa: sweet, seasonal and heartwarming. In this 1947 gem, a hard working realist, Doris (Maureen O’Hara), hires Kris Kringle (aka Santa Claus) as Macy’s resident Santa when they’re original hire ends up to have less-than-saintly habits. Though Doris is skeptical, Kris soon becomes a hit with the company owner and shoppers alike for his commitment to character and honest-to-a-fault attitude. Even Doris’s equally no-nonsense daughter (played by a then-8-year-old Natalie Wood) is won over. However, jealous co-workers aren’t so charmed by Kris’s insistence that he is the real Santa Claus, and soon he’s involved in an epic court battle to prove his sanity and identity. Beloved by generations of cynics and dreamers alike!
