Intro to Improvisational Movement with Olivia London at the M.A.C.

Presented by The M.A.C. (Movement Arts Co-Op) at Unknown

Improvisational dance is about exploring and creating spontaneous, authentic, creative movement. Breaking free of traditional dance technique, improvisation allows you to find new ways to move, break out of habits, step past limitations, and often access a deeper connection between movement and internal feeling. Many find it meditative, relaxing, stress-relieving, energizing, or simply an excellent way to be playful and creative through freedom of movement.

In this series of workshops we will consider our own individual sense of movement, explore movement with partners, play with sources of in-the-moment inspiration, and work on a sense of composition and space to develop skills for performing structured improvisational dances. Take one workshop or take them all! Everyone is welcome regardless of dance or movement experience! Interested students will have an opportunity to perform.

Workshop 1: Introduction to Improvisational Movement – Exploring your own sense of movement

We will begin by exploring our own individual sense of movement and challenging our bodies and minds to play with new ways to move. Whether or not you have ever danced in your life, this class will give you space to move with more intention, creativity, and fun. We will consider what it means to improvise with intention and an eye toward composition, culminating in a short guided group improvisation. Improvisation can be intimidating, even for lifelong dancers, but it allows you to step beyond dance technique, step beyond your own limitations, and, most importantly, play! And don’t worry, no one will be thrown in too quickly.

The M.A.C. (Movement Arts Co-Op) is Columbia, South Carolina’s first movement arts co-op. Located within Tapp’s Arts Center in the historic Tapp’s Building on Main Street. We felt a need in our community to provide work space for movement artists and their students. So we built one. Please contact us if you think we can help you develop your dance/movement/mindfulness business. We are part of the Tapp’s Arts Center, which is a giant artistic laboratory focused on community engagement. Tapp’s encourages artistic agency through exhibitions, cultural events, workshops, classes, and studios to help Columbia create, learn and grow.
