SIMPLICITY
Barry Brian Wheeler & Bohumila Augustinova

BARRY BRIAN WHEELER
Barry Wheeler is an IT professional and a Columbia, SC artist, concentrating his work in digital media. He is a graduate of the South Carolina Honors College (BS, Chemistry) and the University of South Carolina (MA, Media Arts), and he is President of the Jasper Project Board of Directors. His background in science and computers motivates his practice, which explores the relationships between technology, digital process, information design, and art. Barry’s work has been featured at various exhibitions and shows in the Midlands, including Artista Vista, Vista Lights, Indie Grits, Anastasia and Friends, City Art, Colonial Life, the Koger Center, and Tapp’s.

SIMPLICITY is a small collection of some of my favorite digital media (images and video) from grad school and beyond, as well as a series of constructions made of wood, copper, steel, and aluminum – a new direction for a digital artist. Simple images of clouds, landscapes, and flowers, as well as digital montages, projections, and panoramas share space with small, sculpture-like pieces that explore the relationships between dimension, pattern, and material. Marshall McLuhan once said, “We shape our tools, and afterwards, our tools shape us.” As a long-time digital artist, I found this particularly relevant – most of my sculptures are instructive, physical representations of digital concepts. In that regard, SIMPLICITY is both a virtual exhibition of media and a concrete demonstration of digital theory.

BOHUMILA AUGUSTINOVA
Bohumila Augustinova was born in Czech Republic and attended fashion design school. She was always an artist and designer, but in her mid 20s, a friend introduced her to a traditional Moravian wire technique, called tinkering. She has used wire as her main medium ever since. Bohumila is a founder and leader of Yarnbombing of Columbia, and she is the manager and curator of Anastasia & Friends Gallery.

SIMPLICITY: In this collection, I am exploring simplicity, texture, and the various dimensions of copper wire.

The opening exhibit is a part of State Street Art Crawl, which is a part of the City of West Columbia’s Fall Back Fest.
