Jazz@701 Whaley with Carl Payne Big Band

Presented by 701 Whaley at 701 Whaley

After a summer hiatus, JAZZ@701 WHALEY is back with the Carl Payne Big Band, Tuesday, October 24th, 6-8pm at the Market @701 Whaley. This is not your ordinary big band. The Carl Payne Big Band specializes in music from the Big Band Swing Era, with a bit of contemporary Rhythm and Blues. The goal of the band is to preserve the music of the Big Band Era and educate, not only the listening public, but young aspiring musicians. Founder – Carlton Payne Jr., is a retired Marine Corp Band Trumpeter, combat veteran and professional musician who studied at South Carolina State University and the prestigious Berklee College of Music, Boston, Massachusetts.

Come prepared to SWING, SWANG and get your SWAG on. And don’t forget your dancing shoes!!! The 23 member band is composed of excellent musicians and vocalists ready to entertain you with a diverse repertoire of music. The cost is still $15 per person, Cash at the Door. Pizza by the Village Idiot and beverages will be available for sale. The same great atmosphere will be awaiting you, where “the music is the star”. Please come out and join us. We’ve missed you!! If you have not had the 701 experience, we look forward to seeing you. The event is presented in partnership with the 701 Center for Contemporary Art.

Jazz@701 Whaley is in its second season of presenting great jazz music. 701 Whaley, a popular events venue in the Olympia Mill Village in downtown Columbia, has developed into a hot spot for jazz music. Columbia has several wonderful venues to hear jazz music and has become a destination for jazz music and musicians. The Jazz@701 Whaley series differentiates itself in a number of ways. 1. The series is held in The Market, a beautiful building adjacent to the main building and features a 3750 sq ft space with a wide covered porch. It is a great mid-range space size- wise with a casual indoor/outdoor feel. The acoustics and sight lines are phenomenal!!! 2. The star of this series is the music. It is not a bar or a restaurant and does not have to compete with the distractions that sometimes come with these venues. For those who truly want to listen to the music with friends, old and new, in a welcoming and attentive environment, this is the place. We strive to showcase our talented local and regional jazz musicians in an appreciative atmosphere where it is “all about the music”.
