In commemoration of World Refugee Day, the CMA hosts the Carolina Peace Resource Center for a panel discussion. Refugee resettlement has recently been at the center of heated political debate about immigration and national security. But this is not the first time that a refugee crisis has generated such controversy. This talk will put current refugee debates into historical perspective and show how refugees have long been subject to competing impulses of humanitarianism and isolationism in American society.
Panelists
Caroline R. Nagel: Associate Professor, Department of Geography, USC director of the Islamic World Studies Program, and Migration specialist
Thomas Hammond: Journalist, photographed Syrian conflict
Loubna Mrie: participant in the Syrian uprising who is now living as a refugee in New York
