The Columbia College Dance Company presents their annual Dance Faculty & Guest Artist Concert on Friday and Saturday February 3rd and 4th at 7:30pm in Cottingham Theatre. The concert features original works choreographed by Columbia College Dance faculty and guests performed by members of the Columbia College Dance Company and illuminated by the lighting design of Artistic Technical Director, Patrick Faulds.
New on the dance faculty, Assistant Professor of Dance and Dance Education Specialist, Crystal U. Davis, will premiere Miss Hearing, a piece that considers “ways we connect or disconnect when we disagree with each other on deeply entrenched beliefs and how we might dig our way back out to reconnect again.” –Davis. Through the choreographic process of Miss Hearing, performers were lead through a process of exploring 1) how disagreements of this magnitude feel both emotionally and physically in the body, 2) how those feelings are expressed and infest our sense of ourselves, and 3) ways in which these disagreements might be resolved.

The Power Company Collaborative (PoCoCo), led by Artistic Director Martha Brim and Associate Director, Amanda Ling, created Reach/ Rise/ Crest/ Spill which premiered in 2016 at Tapps Art Center for the 2016 Marked by the Water event. The piece was sponsored in part by The Jasper Project and was made as a multidisciplinary commemoration of the first anniversary of South Carolina’s 1000-year flood. The PoCoCo apprentice members will perform this tribute set to poems by Jennifer Bartell, Worthy Evans, Ed Madden, and Lindsay McManus, alongside a video installation by Barry Wheeler.

“Moon Thanks Her Cells for Singing” (Dowd) was also choreographed by Martha Brim in conjunction with her Fall 2016 Somatics III students and generated from studying somatic principles learned in Taking Root to Fly by Irene Dowd. Also in collaboration with the performers, works “I Can’t Stop the Feeling” by Erin Bailey and “The Grind” by Dance Program Coordinator, Marcy Jo Yonkey-Clayton, will premiere.
