Taking Root: The Summer Brothers and the History of Pomaria Nursery

Presented by McKissick Museum at McKissick Museum

Taking Root celebrates the horticultural achievements of the Summer family and explores the history of Pomaria Nursery. A renowned nursery that thrived from the 1840s to the 1870s in central South Carolina, Pomaria was the first major nursery to develop in the lower and middle South, becoming one of the most important American nurseries of the antebellum period. Taking Root sheds light on its founder, William Summer, and the innovative technologies that he and his family brought to tree and flower breeding, featuring botanical specimens and prints of the many flowers and trees grown at Pomaria, as well as photographs and memorabilia of the Summer family.
