The South Carolina State Museum in Columbia is excited to offer a new line of camps for Winter Break 2016 for children aged 6 – 14 years old. Each day will focus on a different subject matter and even includes a special Polar Express Day!

CUSTOMIZE YOUR CAMP SCHEDULE
Campers may register for the entire week or for individual day(s). Each day of the week is ‘themed’ with a different focus. Every day of camp features: morning social time with other campers, museum exploration time, hands-on and interactive activities, snack time and lunch time. Extended Day includes a snack time and activities.

Each day campers will be divided into groups by age. One group for those aged 6 – 8 years, one for aged 9 – 11 years and one for 12 – 14 years. Please note: this webpage is updated periodically and availability of these camps is not guaranteed until registration is confirmed.

ASTRONOMY DAY
Mon., Dec. 26
Campers will learn about the night sky in a special planetarium Seasonal Sky Tour focusing on constellations and planets that are visible in the winter sky. They will also create their own glow-in-the-dark constellation pillows so they can study at night.

HISTORY AND NATURAL HISTORY DAY
Tues., Dec. 27
The history of Christmas in colonial times will be celebrated with traditional wreath making. Campers will also learn about Natural History and how pengiuns stay warm in their freezing environments.

S.T.E.A.M. DAY
Wed., Dec. 28
This day will be “super cool” with our sub-zero science activities that include freezing marshmallows in liquid nitrogen and learning about states of matter. Campers will also learn about circuits when they create their own light up antlers to wear.

ART DAY
Thurs., Dec. 29
Campers will be creating their own silhouette cut outs inspired by South Carolina artist Clay Rice. They will also put their engineering design skills to test as they create 3-D pop-up cards with light up circuits.

POLAR EXPRESS DAY
Fri., Dec. 30
All aboard for an awesome day of Polar Express fun! Campers will experiment with a variety of super absorbent polymers to create their own “instant snow.” After heading to the 4D theater they will celebrate the holidays with smores and hot chocolate.

EXTENDED DAY

camp options are available for an additional $15 ($10 member) per camper per day or $50 ($40 member) for the entire week.
A 50% deposit is required to reserve your camper’s spot and the remaining balance is due 2 weeks prior to the camp.
