Pysanka - Ukranian Egg Art

Pysanka - Ukranian Egg Art

Presented by Columbia Art Center at Columbia Art Center

Pysanky are objects of traditional folk art, the painted eggs. They are created by a method that is similar to batik: Patterns are drawn on the eggs with hot beeswax, which then protects the covered areas from the dye that is applied afterwards. By repeating this process with different color of dye, a multicolored pattern is build up. Finally, the wax is removed to reveal the colors that were sequentially covered up at each stage.
