South Carolina Ballet proudly reintroduces Motown Ballet due to overwhelming demand, following its exceptional success in 2022. This eagerly anticipated revue of the Motown sound and its iconic performers is presented in alignment with our Inclusion, Diversity, Equity, and Access (IDEA) Mission, established in 2020. Building on our longstanding commitment to promoting diversity since the 1970s, we have been at the forefront, featuring principal dancers of color and creating productions like Off the Wall & Onto the Stage: Dancing the Art of Jonathan Green, Lion King, and Emanuel. Motown Ballet, accompanied by live music directed by Mark Rapp Music, explores the unparalleled Motown sound, tracing the ascent of iconic performers and their timeless recordings. Motown’s historic fusion of rhythm and blues, gospel, and pop aimed at a broad audience, earning its reputation as the “Sound of Young America” with an unparalleled hit ratio on the Billboard charts. Dominating the 1960s and 1970s with artists like the Jackson 5, The Commodores, Stevie Wonder, and Diana Ross, Motown’s influence remains unparalleled.
