Baker & Baker presents An Immersive Opera from Nathan Felix

Presented by Columbia Museum of Art at Columbia Museum of Art

Immerse yourself in this unique, one-time-only operatic experience amidst the art at the CMA. Composer Nathan Felix presents an immersive opera occurring in various spaces and galleries throughout the museum. The audience is encouraged to follow the opera’s narrative, which revolves around a South Carolina story, by following the soloists from space to space, but each audience member is ultimately given agency to explore based on feeling, sight, and soundscape. This original performance is the only opportunity to experience this very special presentation created for the CMA. Reception includes light snacks and a cash bar. Free with membership or admission. Join today!

Nathan Felix (born 1981) is a Mexican American composer known for his immersive operas and experimental films, most notably his guerilla-style approach to presenting classical music in unconventional spaces, where performances use space, movement, and acoustics to activate each new location. Felix’s music has premiered in Bulgaria, Portugal, Spain, Japan, China, Sweden, Denmark, Mongolia, and the United States and has been featured on the BBC, MTV, NPR, TPR, and PBS. Felix often focuses on telling Latinx-themed and minority stories that highlight border issues, underserved communities, and his Hispanic heritage.

The Baker & Baker series is devoted to highlighting diverse musical performances, ranging from baroque music with harpsichords to avant-garde music played with nontraditional materials, and showcases musical excellence in its many forms.
