Sgraffito is a surface decorating technique produced by applying layers of colors to leather hard pottery and then scratching off parts of the layers to create contrasting images, patterns, and textures.
Sgraffito (Italian means “to scratch”) is a surface decorating technique produced by applying layers of color or colors (underglazes or colored slips) to leather hard pottery and then scratching off parts of the layer(s) to create contrasting images, patterns, and textures to reveal the clay color underneath. Students will practice on clay tiles which will be provided, and then do their own pots.
