About the Feature Poet Marcus Turner was born the youngest of three children to Brenda and Dennis Turner. He moved a lot as a child before settling down in Lynchburg, VA where he was primarily raised. He graduated from E.C. Glass high school in 2003 where first fell in love with writing and music, but later shifted his focus towards poetry. After moving to South Carolina in 2005, he was soon introduced to spoken word where he realized if he wanted to be a spoken word artist he not only had to grow, but had to be reborn and shortly after adopted the nick name Black Phoenix. He has been a part of numerous slam teams, tied for second in the King of the South slam, won the 2015 Southernfried Haiku slam and tied for 9th individual at the Southernfried slam. True to his nickname this is not the end of his story, or his growth.
