RICHLAND LIBRARY HOSTS: IT'S A GULLAH GEECHEE CELEBRATION!

Richland Library will host “It’s a GULLAH GEECHEE Celebration” Saturday, January 29, 11 – 3 p.m. Participants can enjoy the socially distanced cultural experience at Hyatt Park (950 Jackson Avenue, 29203).

The Gullah Geechee Cultural Heritage Corridor, introduced to congress by The Honorable Congressman James E. Clyburn, is a National Heritage Area designed to preserve, share and interpret the history, traditional cultural practices, heritage sites, and natural resources associated with Gullah Geechee people of coastal North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia, and Florida.

Visitors of “It’s a GULLAH GEECHEE Celebration” can plan to view the artistry of South Carolina’s State handicraft, sweetgrass basketry, Gullah artwork, storytelling, enjoy African drumming and dance, Gullah cuisine and meet featured guests.

Featured guests of the event include:
Mrs. Natalie Daise, performer, educator, and storyteller, widely known for hosting with husband Ron, famed Nick Jr, show “Gullah Gullah Island.”

Aunt Pearlie Sue, delivering Gullah-flavored folktales through her character Anita Singleton-Prather, a native of the Sea Islands of Beaufort, South Carolina.

Black Cowboys of Rembert, South Carolina paying homage to the nation’s first “cowboys” and teaching the history of cattle ranching which first appeared in South Carolina’s Lowcountry.

This program is in partnership with the South Carolina Humanities Council and the Richland Library African-American History and Cultural Events Committee (AAHCE).

Richland Library received a Growth Grant from South Carolina Humanities, www.schumanities.org. Funding for the Growth Grants has been provided by the National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH) as part of the American Rescue Plan Act of 2021 and the NEH Sustaining the Humanities through the American Rescue Plan (SHARP) initiative.
