“How is it that a slave came to jot down not only his signature but lines of poetry and proverb on the pots and jars he made? How was he allowed to circulate his voice across the normally obliterative economic exchange paths of antebellum slavery? How is it that this unique voice still nobly speaks through gargantuan vessels today, speaking in a manner that seems almost to anticipate this equally gargatuan feat of passing through its own time into ours?”
