Outdoor Film Screening: White Nights

Outdoor Film Screening: White Nights

Presented by Columbia Museum of Art at Columbia Museum of Art

In celebration of The Ironic Curtain: Art from the Soviet Underground, join us on Boyd Plaza for an outdoor screening of one of Curator Catherine Walworth’s favorite films. White Nights (1985) transports us back to the mid-eighties, when the Soviet Union was still in existence and a powerhouse on the world stage. Far into the northern hemisphere, the weeks around the summer solstice can bring what’s known as white nights, when sunsets are late, sunrises are early, and darkness is never complete. Here is the setting where Russian ballet dancer/defector Nikolai Rodchenko (Mikhail Baryshnikov) and American dancer/defector Raymond Greenwood (Gregory Hines) form an unlikely friendship and make their escape to the American consulate after an emergency plane landing brings the two together. Rated PG-13. Beer and wine available for purchase. Free popcorn. Galleries open at 7:00 p.m. Film at sundown.
