Spotlight on the Contemporary Art of Nicole Michelle Tully

Nicole Michelle Tully (b. 1972, Germany) was one of eight original members of the Jacob Collins Studio (1994-97) and was one of eleven founding members of the Water Street Atelier (1997-98), both in Brooklyn, NY. She is the co-founder of Studio Escalier, where she is also on the faculty.

“My work evolves out of my immediate surroundings and centers on those closest to me. My husband and I , along with our 6 year old daughter, live and work in Paris and the French countryside. We migrate back and forth between the city and the countryside to teach and to paint. There are subtle differences between the work that gets made in each specific place. I am interested in the unique, unrepeatable conditions of light within a given place, in a given season, at a specific time and the emotional impact of a particular light effect.

“Most of my paintings evolve over weeks – sometimes months and occasionally, years. I tend to use a medium sized, prismatic palette of about 15 colors. This varies slightly depending on the subject.”
