Experience the best Y.E.T. at Town Theatre this summer! Youth Emerge Theatre ~ encouraging students to be their best YET. Directed by B. Scott Vaughan, M.A.T. with 19 years’ experience in theatre, Town’s program elevates the standard for the discipline of acting and for molding new talent in Columbia. All classes have been designed to provide students with a broad taste for the theatre, for performance and for creating a production to be showcased at the end of camp. Register at towntheatre.com!

We are excited about Town Theatre’s summer camps! We had planned to begin enrollment on March 23, but given the circumstances of the day, we will hold off on opening enrollment. Check back for details on when you can sign up. However, go ahead and take a look at what we have to offer!

Open Theatre (throughout the summer)
Rising 5th through 12th grade ~ By Appointment Only
Want to brush up on your performance skills, prepare for an upcoming audition or work on *that* song? Interested in building your musical theatre muscles with some of the best? This is the place for you! Schedule an appointment with our faculty for some one-on-one training. Call the theatre to discuss your needs and we’ll develop a plan for you. You can select any number of 30-minute or 60-minute sessions based upon your goals. Call for rates.

Life is a Cabaret (throughout the summer)
For 9th to 12th grade only
Developing and performing in your own cabaret is a performer’s dream. The student will be matched with a mentor to help develop a cabaret which will be performed at summer’s end at Town Theatre or at another location within the community. This opportunity is designed for the seasoned student performer who can work independently after consultation with his or her cabaret mentor. The student will also work with theatre management on marketing his or her event as well as spend time with an accompanist in preparation for cabaret. This opportunity is limited to 5 participants. The fee will cover rights and royalties, music acquisition as well as stipends for the mentor and accompanist. Fee: $300

June 8-12
9:00 AM – 12:00 PM ~ Give My Regards to Broadway
Rising K through 4th grade
Back by popular demand, this musical theatre camp explores the classic art of capturing an audience with song and dance. We’ll include songs from shows such as Annie, Singin’ in the Rain, Bye Bye Birdie and Peter Pan that will challenge young performers and give them a taste of showbiz! We’ll explore all elements of creating a performance for the stage, including voice, movement and character development. At week’s end, families and friends will be invited to watch the students perform their musical theatre showcase!

Rising 5th through 9th grade
An elevated version of the Give My Regards to Broadway camp for our middle-school aged performers, this camp explores the classic art of capturing an audience with song and dance. Students will be challenged with a variety of songs from shows such as Hairspray, The Addams Family, Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat and Once Upon A Mattress. Opportunities will be given for solos, both dance and vocal, and all elements of creating a performance for stage will be explored: voice, movement, and character development. At week’s end, families and friends will be invited to watch the students perform their musical theatre showcase!

June 15-19
9 AM to 12 noon ~ Take a Walk on the WILD Side
Rising K through 4th grade
Actors are often called upon to play all types of roles – even those that are not human! Come take part in this camp that will help you prepare to portray musical theatre characters from the animal kingdom! Students will learn and perform songs and scenes from shows like The Jungle Book, Tarzan, The Lion King and The Little Mermaid. At week’s end, families and friends will be invited to watch students perform their songs and scenes.

12:30 PM to 3:30 PM ~ Take a Walk on the WILD(er) Side
Rising 5th to 9th Grade

Come take part in this camp that will help you prepare to portray musical theatre characters from the animal kingdom! Students will learn and perform songs and scenes from shows like The Jungle Book, Tarzan, The Lion King and The Little Mermaid. This afternoon session for middle school-aged performers will also feature elements of costume design and student-led choreography. At week’s end, families and friends will be invited to watch students perform their songs and scenes.

June 22-26
9:00 AM to 12:00 PM ~ Town’s Tweens
Rising 4th to 8th Grade
You may be familiar with our Town Teen Troupe – a group of 7th to 12th graders who meet weekly to work as a performance. The theatre is interested in creating a second group – the Town Tweens for students in 4th to 8th grade. Come join us this week to learn some exciting song and dance routines. This week of camp can serve as your audition for the Tween group though you are not required to participate in the group after the conclusion of camp. After the team is selected, the group will meet twice monthly throughout the school year to work on performance pieces that we will present pre-show at Town Theatre and elsewhere in the community. This camp is recommended for the student who has prior performing experience and is comfortable working on multiple songs/dance routines. (Note: there will be a fee for students who choose to participate in the Tween group after the camp concludes.)

12:30 PM to 3:30 PM ~ 5-6-7-8!
All ages 5 to adult
Come tap your cares away with this tap intensive workshop. Led by instructors from the SC Music and Dance Academy, students of all ages and levels are welcome! Beginning students will start with the basics and move on to more advanced steps. Advanced dancers can hone already learned skills and progress even more! At the end of the week, students will be ready for a musical theatre tap showcase. Note this class is open to ages 5 and up. Students will be divided by age and ability.

July 6-10
9 AM to 12 noon ~ It’s a Jolly Holiday with Mary!
Rising K to 4th Grade
Did you miss the chance to ‘Step In Time’ this spring in our youth theatre production of Mary Poppins Jr? Or were you part of our production and can’t wait to revisit the show and perhaps play a different part? Join us for a ‘Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious’ week of musical theatre! Students will work on songs and scene selections from the Broadway musical. The focus will be on performing as an ensemble, but some solo opportunities will be given. It’s sure to be a ‘Jolly Holiday’ with Mary!

Rising 5th to 9th Grade

July 13-17

Rising K to 4th Grade
Rodgers and Hammerstein’s Cinderella hits the Town Theatre stage in July, and our campers will have a chance to experience the magic, too! Students will step into the roles of Cinderella, her stepmother, stepsisters, the handsome Prince Christopher, and Cinderella’s Fairy Godmother. Campers will create their own versions of scenes and songs from the musical, including “In My Own Little Corner” and “Stepsisters’ Lament.” They will present their showcase to family and friends at week’s end.

Rising 5th to 10th Grade
Sing ~ Dance ~ Act! You can have it all! Join us for an intense (yet extremely rewarding!) camp for students who are eager to explore performing on a regular basis and perhaps even study theatre in high school and/or college. We’ll spend our days developing performance pieces (scenes as well as musical selections) that focus on the whole performer (vocals, movement, and character). Enjoy learning from diverse faculty with expertise in their focus area. An end-of-week showcase will allow students to present their hard work to friends and family.

July 27-31
9:00 AM to 12 PM ~ Frozen “Too”
Rising 2nd to 5th Grade
Did you miss the Fall 2019 youth theatre production of Frozen Jr., or were you in it and want to take a walk down memory lane? This is the camp for you! Explore characters like Elsa, Anna, Kristoff, and Sven, and the songs and scenes that bring their story to life. We’ll “Let it Go” and have a great time “In Summer,” all while learning the meaning of “Hygge”! Students will perform in a week’s end showcase for family and friends.

12:30 PM – 3:30 PM ~ The Next Level
Rising 6th to 12th grade
Are you ready to take your skills to the next level? Need to find some new songs for upcoming auditions and performances? Just want to strengthen your musical theatre muscles? Interested in joining the Town Teen Troupe and want to give it a try? This musical theatre intensive is the right camp for you! Students will work on proper techniques in voice, acting, and movement for the stage, as well as making connections to a performance piece. A musical theatre youth cabaret will be presented at week’s end with the goal to perform in a local restaurant. Current T3 students are strongly encouraged to participate. Students who are not currently in T3, but who seek membership, may use the week’s end showcase as an audition for the group.

August 3-7
9:00 AM – 12:00 PM ~ Storytellers
Rising K – 4th grade
Children are naturally gifted storytellers and this camp is designed to get those creative juices flowing! Using children’s books such as The Rooster Who Would Not Be Quiet, Titch the Tiddler, What Small Rabbit Heard, and Tacky In Trouble,students will use their incredible imaginations to bring the stories to the stage! Our young performers will learn about thoughtful placement on the stage, narration and developing characters without relying on scenery or many props. At week’s end, a showcase will be presented for friends and family.

12:30 PM – 3:30 PM ~ A Look Ahead
Rising 5th to 9th Grade
Explore songs and scenes from the upcoming shows of the 102nd mainstage season: 42nd Street, Elf, The Red Velvet Cake Wars, Bright Star and Jekyll & Hyde. Many of our youth performers have expressed their excitement over participating in mainstage shows and taking on challenging roles. We think they ought to have that chance! This week will be focused on learning about different styles of musical theatre, using the upcoming 102nd season as examples. We will pull appropriate scenes and songs from those shows to put the lessons into action and a showcase will be presented at week’s end for family and friends.

Camp Tap Away
For all sessions except Triple Threat and 5-6-7-8, students may add on a 30-minute tap class only $40. The class runs from 12:00 PM to 12:30 PM for both morning and afternoon camps. Dancers are separated by age and ability.

A $100 non-refundable deposit will hold a spot in any camp. Payment is due in full by June 1 for June camps and by July 1 for July camps. Camp Tap Away should be paid in full at the time of registration.
