Arts @ Home

Presented by Sonoma Valley Museum of Art at Online/Virtual Space

In response to temporary school closures due to COVID-19, SVMA presents ARTS@Home, special lessons available online for families working and learning from home.

These series of art lessons, prepared by SVMA arts education staff, can provide children with hours of stimulating and fun learning activities—good for students and good for parents and grandparents! Each week SVMA will release new ARTS@Home learning activities.

Lesson 1: Drawing Half a Portrait, instructs students about symmetry and proportion by cutting a photograph in half and using a pencil and ruler to measure and mark important points around the face. Students will connect the dots and watch their complete faces emerge.

Lesson 2: Shoebox Faces, opens minds to new ideas, materials and methods. Using humble materials such as paper, string and a square box you can create a floating face that Picasso would be proud of! Click the button below for the Lesson 2.

Lesson 3: No Art Supplies? No Problem! Here are five creative prompts for children (and adults) who want something creative, fun, and hands-on to do that requires absolutely ZERO art supplies.

Lesson 4: Textured Puppets by Diane Egger-Bovet: Using a simple bag and some papercraft wizardry, you can create a puppet that is full of texture, character, and whimsy.

ARTS@Home is an educational program that can serve students and support teachers as they endeavor to translate the classroom experience to home. Some of the lessons continue to respond to SVMA’s current exhibitions, and some will include broader topics in art history or ways to encourage creativity and relieve stress.
