Celebrate Black History at the State Museum

The South Carolina State Museum is proud to celebrate African American history and culture with a special production from Bright Star Theater, Saturday, Feb. 29.

Bright Star Theater is one of the largest professional touring theater companies in the country, will perform two special productions, Sat. Feb. 29 that will take guests on an amazing and inspirational journey through African American history.

Heroes of the Underground Railroad

Guests will get an inspiring look at the lives and work of notable Abolitionists and slaves from America’s Underground Railroad. The show provides a fundamental historical context of the time period while recreating the lives and work of several prominent and nearly forgotten heroes. Harriet Tubman, Levi Coffin, Henry ‘Box’ Brown, John Parker and Frederick Douglass are just some of the figures brought to life within this 45-minute show. The play sheds light on everything from secret messages along the routes to music from the period. Heroes of the Underground Railroad seeks to inspire young audiences with the stories of everyday Americans who stood up for their beliefs and work.

Black History Hall of Fame

join us in this fast-paced adventure through the Black History Hall of Fame, led by Dr. Daisy and Professor Paisley. In just 45-minutes, your young audience will be introduced to over a dozen groundbreakers and hall-of-famers that have largely contributed to shaping our nation’s past, present and future. You’ll see everyone from Maya Angelou and Aretha Franklin to the Buffalo Soldiers and Mae Jemison and that’s just to name a few! Young audience volunteers and incredibly talented performers bring this show to life in every way
