Bitter Sweet

Poet, author, activist, and cancer survivor Ashley Gowens aka Bitter Sweet is a Greenville South Carolina native who has grown to be an outstanding budding artist in the poetry community. Regarded as one of the most newly dynamic poets in the upstate of South Carolina, Bitter Sweet is rapidly becoming a legend, noted for her accomplishments both on and off the stage: she is a member of the Upstate SC Poetry Slam Team-Say What, competed and always ranked top 3 in several slams throughout the upstate of South Carolina, she is the 2012 Upstate SC Poetry Slam Team-Say What co-grand slam champion and 2013 Upstate SC Poetry Slam Team-Say What grand slam champion, Bugsy Calhoun’s Soul Sista Slam Winner in Columbia SC in August 2013, and winner of Queen Sheba’s Rough Language Slam in Atlanta GA in September 2013. For three years Bitter Sweet has been a part of Wits End Poetry, a non-profit organization that does community service by performing for the youth and senior citizens, and writing and performing workshops and slams for teens Bitter Sweet has been writing for ten years and her poetry has been described as “healing, raw, honest, and moving.” The listener is instantly taken on Bitter Sweet’s life’s journey of love, hurt, broken friendships, struggle with cancer, and finally learning to love self. Bitter Sweet has gone on to say, “everything I write…I’ve been through. I’ve always wanted to inspire others…to help someone else. There’s a story in me that people need to hear.”    Bitter Sweet’s goals are to travel the world sharing her poems and speaking to others in hope to save lives, and write books about her experiences. Some of her influences are Maya Angelou, William Shakespeare, and Langston Hughes.
