Baker & Baker presents Jazzing up the Classics with Noel Freidline

Presented by Columbia Museum of Art at Columbia Museum of Art

Roll over, Beethoven! The Noel Freidline Trio welcomes the Charlotte String Quartet to present some of classical music’s great symphonic works reinterpreted. This marriage of classical and jazz features several great classical themes reworked to the sensitivity and flexibility of a string quartet and woven together with a jazz piano trio. Friedline himself is responsible for this union 200 years in the making, with a commission from author and curator Martin McFie.  Works include Beethoven’s 5th Symphony, Vivaldi’s “Spring,” Barber’s “Adagio for Strings,” and “Canon Over the Rainbow,” a clever fusion of Pachelbel’s “Canon in D” with Harold Arlen’s “Somewhere Over the Rainbow.”

The Baker & Baker series is devoted to highlighting diverse musical performances, ranging from Baroque music with harpsichords to avant-garde music played with nontraditional materials, and showcases musical excellence in its many forms. Concert Sponsors: Nancy and Richard Layman. Premier Sponsors: Nancy and Richard Layman; Barbara B. Boyd; Howard Gilman Foundation; Dr. and Mrs. Harold I. Friedman; Susan Thorpe and John Baynes. Sponsored by: John and Bebe Barton; Becky and Earl Ellis; Bonnie and Harry Goldberg; Mary Baskin-Waters & Samuel C. Waters; Wholistic Therapy & Coaching Center of the Midlands.
