NINTH ANNUAL JUNETEENTH CELEBRATION TO FOCUS ON CONNECTIONS BETWEEN CIVIL WAR AND CIVIL RIGHTS

Second Calvary Baptist Church will hold its Ninth Annual Juneteenth Celebration at 1110 Mason Road in Columbia, South Carolina on Saturday, June 27, 2015 at 9:00 am. This year’s Juneteenth Celebration is held in conjunction with Waverly District, Civil War to Civil Rights, part of the ‘Burning of Columbia’ series of activities commemorating the 150thAnniversary of the Civil War. Juneteenth is sponsored by Second Calvary Baptist Church, with the ‘Burning of Columbia’ activities sponsored by the James M. Hinton Foundation through funding from the City of Columbia Hospitality Tax grant program.

Civil rights presentations, Hinton Hall, 9:15 – 10:00

Sonya Hodges-Grantham, Author and Genealogist

Briggs V. Elliott, Brown V. Board of Education

Hodges-Grantham will focus on the Briggs V. Elliott and the Brown V. Board of Education cases, and the role of residents of Waverly in those cases.

Catherine Fleming Bruce, Tnovsa LLC

Waverly from Civil War to Civil Rights: the Leadership of James M. Hinton and others

Bruce  will expand the little known story of Waverly District’s connection to the Civil War and Civil Rights periods by highlight the histories of Waverly residents and civil rights leaders James M Hinton, John McCray and his wife, author Carrie Allen McCray, Benedict College President Rev. Dr. John J. Starks and others, and through discussion of Waverly District from the Civil War era and its aftermath, through reconstruction, the turn of the century, the 1930’s, the civil rights period, and the modern period. Waverly District is Columbia’s only African American National Register of Historic Places Residential District. Waverly celebrated its Centennial in 2013, and received broad press coverage and local recognition, including a joint resolution from the South Carolina State legislature, and a reading into the Congressional Record from Congressman James E. Clyburn. Waverly District is adjacent to Allen University and Benedict College, which are also National Register of Historic Places Districts

William S. Robinson, VP of Title III and Sponsored Programs, Allen University

Allen University’s Chappelle Auditorium from Civil War to Civil Rights

Robinson will discuss Chappelle Auditorium as the work of black architect John Anderson Lankford at Allen University during the turn of the century; as a site for presentations by various civil rights leaders, including NAACP leader James M Hinton, which led to the Briggs v. Elliott case. Robinson will also discuss the restoration of role Chappelle Auditorium now underway, and the role the facility will play in Waverly and the community at large, given the history of AME establishment of Allen University after the Civil War.
