Based in Columbia, Lyles, Bissett, Carlisle and Wolff (LBC&W) was perhaps the South's preeminent architecture firm for thirty years following World War II. LBC&W designed some of the state’s – and certainly Columbia’s – most notable buildings in a range of interpretations of Modernism. Based on research conducted in a joint graduate-undergraduate course at the University of South Carolina in the spring of 2015, this presentation will demonstrate the breadth of LBC&W’s work, including university and government architecture and single and multi-family housing. This presentation will focus on three representative buildings in Columbia: the Cornell Arms apartment building (1949), the Carolina Coliseum (1968-9), and the State Capitol Complex (1970s). Short guided tours will follow the presentation.
