LBC&W: Researching and Preserving Mid-Century Modern Architecture

Presented by Department of Art, University of South Carolina and University of South Carolina at Program Room, Ernest F. Hollings Special Collections Library, Thomas Cooper Library, University of South Carolina

Based in Columbia, Lyles, Bissett, Carlisle and Wolff (LBC&W) was perhaps the South's preeminent architecture firm for thirty years following World War II. LBC&W designed some of the state’s – and certainly Columbia’s – most notable buildings in a range of interpretations of Modernism. Based on research conducted in a joint graduate-undergraduate course at the University of South Carolina in the spring of 2015, this presentation will demonstrate the breadth of LBC&W’s work, including university and government architecture and single and multi-family housing. This presentation will focus on three representative buildings in Columbia: the Cornell Arms apartment building (1949), the Carolina Coliseum (1968-9), and the State Capitol Complex (1970s). Short guided tours will follow the presentation.
