Stick Fly

Stick Fly

Presented by Workshop Theatre at 701 Whaley

This production of Lydia R. Diamond’s Stick Fly addresses the playwright’s given subjects of race, gender relations, colorism, family, and wealth, but moreover examines the idea of self. Sometimes someone can be their own enemy. Self-worth and self-consciousness are constructs that run rampant in this play and our society at large. This becomes even more intriguing when someone’s notion of one’s self is pitted against someone else’s concept of them.

How do people react to each other with so many different variables set up? Is it possible to remove labels from someone and just treat them as a person with a blank slate? Is it possible to remove labels from yourself? Do you create a self-fulfilling fallacy by placing labels onto people which in turn makes you prejudiced or judgmental?

“These are all questions the audience should leave Stick Fly considering and discussing,” director Bakari Lebby said. “I think people should leave the theatre talking. Opening up a dialogue is the only way to initiate positive change. And we could all use a little change.”

The Box Office opens on March 18 for members and March 20 for the general public. Reserved seating is available, and can be handled both through the Box Office or online at workshoptheatre.com. Please note that due to subject matter and strong language children’s tickets will not be offered for this show.

Some show dates vary from previous shows this season. There will be two performances on Saturday, March 28 — a 3 pm matinee and an 8 pm evening show. Closing night will be on Saturday, April 4 due to Easter Sunday.

All performances will be at The Market Space at 701 Whaley.
