An adults only fundraiser for Columbia Children’s Theatre (no one under 21 allowed), it’s both a fun and slightly educational event where teams of three are tasked with spelling a variety of interesting, and sometimes bawdy words.
Columbia Spells returns for the fifth year Saturday, February 2, 2019 at Columbia Children’s Theatre. Located at 3400 Forest Drive in the Richland Mall (right next to Barnes and Noble.) Enjoy a 6:00 p.m. happy hour with a cash bar, and an adult spelling bee starting at 7:00 p.m. An adults-only fundraiser for Columbia Children’s Theatre, guests ages 21 and above are allowed. All proceeds from this fundraiser go to theatre operations. This year will feature former three-time National Spelling Bee competitor and actor extraordinaire Jonathan Monk as the professional enunciator, announcing words and definitions properly and with passion along with emcees Scott Padgett and Hembree.
Several rounds of spelling narrow down the final teams that go head to head to claim the winning trophy. Past winners include such teams as the Phonics Hookers, returning to challenge their two former wins. Other past winners include the Bee-Dazzlers, the winners from the very first year and UnicornSlaughterHouseDeath Match, the second year’s winners. There is also a People’s Choice Award decided on from audience contributions and a Best Team Spirit Award chosen by the judges.
Tickets are $15 for onlookers and supporters. Teams of three can enter the competition for $100.
