FAAAC presents a lecture with curator Victoria Cooke: African-American Art at the CMA

Presented by Columbia Museum of Art at Columbia Museum of Art

The Columbia Museum of Art and Friends of African American Art and Culture (FAAAC), a museum membership affiliate group, present a lecture with curator Victoria Cooke: African-American Art at the CMA. Get a sneak peek of two exciting exhibitions of African-American art premiering at the CMA in the spring of 2016. Organized by the Columbia Museum of Art, REMIX: Themes & Variations in African-American Art is a groundbreaking exhibition that includes a wide variety of work from the paintings of Hale Woodruff and Charles White to the contemporary sculptures of Willie Cole and Renée Stout and the paintings of Fahamu Pecou and Mickalene Thomas. REMIX highlights the practice among many African-American artists of retelling historical themes and stories in new ways and from their own unique perspective. The second exhibition runs concurrently with REMIX and features modern and contemporary work from the CMA’s own collection of African-American art. With works by artists as diverse as Romare Bearden and Alison Saar, the CMA has built a collection for education and enrichment of the community and all who visit our institution. A conversation with South Carolina artists Tarleton Blackwell, Michaela Pilar Brown, Larry Lebby, and Dr. Leo Twiggs follows the lecture. FAAAC members only. Free. Not a member? Join at the door!
