University Band & Symphonic Winds Concert

University Band & Symphonic Winds Concert

Presented by USC School of Music at Koger Center for the Arts

The University of South Carolina University Band and Symphonic Winds will share a concert on Tuesday, November 27 at 7:30pm in the Koger Center for the Arts. The two groups are comprised of some of the most talented students in the School of Music, as well as gifted instrumentalists from across campus. The University Band opens the concert with a program titled “Conversations.” Their program highlights the importance of sincere communication and its power to move society towards understanding and respect. Featuring several collaborations, the University Band will perform works by a diverse cast of composers including a world premiere by up and coming composer, Joshua Hinkel. Hinkel’s Forever to Thee honors the life and legacy of former USC band director, Pat Wylie.  The program will also feature new USC faculty member, Jack Eaddy as guest conductor.

The USC Symphonic Winds will follow the University Band with their program “Radiant Joy.” Each of three works on their program relates to the joy found in life, music, and music making. Following their opening work “Radiant Joy,” by Steven Bryant, the group will be joined by USC School of Music Professor of Voice, Dr. Tina Milhorn Stallard on Mark Camphouse’s Symphony No. 3. The work, subtitled “Symphony from Ivy Green,” takes its text from the writings of Helen Keller. Keller’s writings are filled with joy, in spite of the seemingly insurmountable odds dealt her by the illness which left her blind and deaf when she was 19 months old. The concert will close with a set of 9 dances composed during the Renaissance by Tielman Susato. The arrangement for modern wind ensemble was created by Patrick Dunnigan and features unique combinations of instruments, colorful percussion, and even guitar.
