The Dining Room is a mosaic of scenes — some funny, some touching, some rueful — which, taken together, create an in-depth portrait of a vanishing species: the upper-middle-class WASP.
Six actors create 57 characters ranging from little boys to stern grandfathers, from giggling teenage girls to Irish housemaids. Each vignette introduces a new set of people and events; a father lectures his son on grammar and politics; a boy returns from boarding school to discover his mother’s infidelity; a senile grandmother doesn’t recognize her own sons at Christmas dinner; a daughter caught in a failing marriage begs to return home, etc. In other words, it is an actor’s playground. And when you have the incredible talents of Ruth Glowacki, Samantha Elkins, Emily Padgett, George Dinsmore, Lee Williams, and Hans Boeschen, this actor’s playground becomes an audience’s delight.
Director Daniel Gainey makes his first solo main stage directing debut with Workshop Theatre after last season’s wildly entertaining production of Beehive (co-directed with Jocelyn Sanders) and the wickedly funny late-night Mrs. Bob Cratchitt’s Wild Christmas Binge. His streamlined production approach fits this play beautifully as you watch each actor slip between decades and generations.
All eight performances are at The Market Space at 701 Whaley. Call the Box Office for reserved seating.
Prices: $20 for adults, $17 for seniors/military, $14 for students, $10 for children
