About Midlands Light Opera Society
Midlands Light Opera Society exists to provide a place for singers of all experience levels and ages to perform light opera/operetta together and to bring this art form to audiences throughout the midlands region of South Carolina. Values:-
- Open Door: All are welcome to participate in this group. The chorus is non-auditioned and welcomes participants of all ages and experience levels. Participants may bring children to rehearsals whether or not the children participate (though one-off exceptions may be required in extreme circumstances).
- Community Participation: All participants are encouraged to help with the “backstage”, publicity, and business needs for producing our shows, and non-performers are also welcome to help; it takes a village to create a fully staged production. While professional and aspiring professional singers may audition for our roles, we also encourage and celebrate auditions from community members.
- Lighter, Longer Rehearsal Periods: On average, chorus participation in our productions should require one 1.5 hour rehearsal each week until production week. Keeping this in mind, the rehearsal process for our shows will often be stretched out to 2-3 months rather than 4-6 weeks. Leads may have additional rehearsals, but the aim is to keep these minimal.
- Fun: We believe that participation in the arts can and should be enjoyable: we aim to have fun creating shows that are fun to watch.
- Artistic Excellence: We believe that Fun and Excellence are not mutually exclusive, and that we can bring our best efforts to the table while also enjoying the experience. We also hold that “Excellence” is different from “Perfection,” and as a community group, improvement and growth is Excellent.
