Artist Biography
Sonya Diimmler began painting later in life during a season of caring for her aging parents. Painting quickly became a way to process loss and reconcile grief. Dramatic use of color, loose brushwork and energetic markmaking driven by emotion inform her dreamy contemporary landscapes and bold abstract works.
Sonya’s artistic momentum gained public recognition starting in 2021, when she was featured at the Columbia Metropolitan Airport. She went on to exhibit in multiple group and solo shows including Rob Shaw’s Gallery, USC’s edgy Southern Exposure concert series and at MIRCI’s 52 Windows. Most recently Sonya’s abstract work was juried into 701cca’s 2025 Biennial Show featuring contemporary South Carolina artists and Greenwood’s SC Festival of Flowers Juried Show. Her work can be found in town at Rob Shaw’s Gallery and at High Noon in Ballentine.
Beyond the studio, Sonya is active in Chapin, SC’s creative community. As both artist and arts administrator, she has created and helped lead public art initiatives that bring color, connection, and creativity to the town.
