About This Show
Celebrating 25 Years of The Palmetto Opera!
Join The Palmetto Opera in celebrating 25 years with a full-scale production of the grand opera Carmen by George Bizet featuring an internationally renowned cast.
Carmen is set in southern Spain and tells the story of a fateful encounter between Don José, a soldier, who is seduced by the fiery Romani woman, Carmen. To win Carmen’s love, Don José deserts his childhood sweetheart and his military duties. Carmen rejects Don José and turns her affections to the glamorous bullfighter Escamillo, resulting in a jealous retaliation and ultimately her demise. Though controversial at the time for its themes of working-class life, social rebellion, and a free-spirited heroine who meets a tragic end, Carmen quickly gained recognition for Bizet’s emotionally rich score and is now considered a cornerstone of the operatic repertoire.
This story has it all–love, jealousy, possession–and with famous arias like “Habanera,” “Sequidilla,” “Toreador,” and Don José’s heartfelt “Flower Song,” it is one of the world’s most beloved operas.
Carmen will be performed in the original French with English supertitles projected above the stage.
Approximately 2 hrs 30 min. with a 20-minute intermission.
