Winds for Change

University of South Carolina Flute Professor Jenifer Parker-Harley and South Carolina Philharmonic Principle Flutist Wendy Cohen will perform the South Carolina premiere of a new double flute concerto at USC.  The piece, written by renowned composer and flutist Cynthia Folio is titled Winds For Change and is composed for two flutes, string orchestra, percussionist, video, and live electronic manipulation of the flutes.

Folio says of the piece “The topic is global warming and its associated climate change, especially as it relates to the Americas. It evokes the sounds of folk music, such as Native American flute and Eskimo Inuit music. It also emulates sounds of nature, such as water, air, storms, fires, glaciers—as well as animals such as birds, dolphins, and whales. Much of it relates to water and water life.”

The piece was commissioned by the flute duet, ZAWA!, with a consortium of contributors including Dr. Parker-Harley, Ms. Cohen, the University of South Carolina, Sherry Kujala and Lindsey Goodman at Northwestern University, Christina Jennings and Jennifer Keeney at the University of Colorado at Boulder, Carol Wincenc, Marianne Gedigian, Leone Buyse, the American Composers Forum through their Subito grants, and the Boyer College of Music and Dance at Temple University.

The performance will be accompanied by the University of South Carolina Chamber Orchestra and will take place in the USC School of Business Johnson Performance Hall located at 1014 Greene Street.  The event is free and open to the public.
