USC Symphonic Winds - West Meets East

Join the University of South Carolina Symphonic Winds this Sunday, October 7 at 4 pm in the Koger Center as they present a concert entitled “West Meets East.” The program includes music inspired by the Pacific coast of California, patriotic hymns of New England, and the bustling night life of Las Vegas. The concert is free and open to the public.

The Symphonic Winds, comprised of some of the most outstanding music students at the University, is conducted by Dr. Cormac Cannon, Associate Director of Bands, and regularly performs concerts of diverse repertoire. This Sunday’s program opens with Pacific Fanfare, by Frank Ticheli, which includes antiphonal choirs of woodwinds and brass, along with off stage soloists. William Schuman’s New England Triptych, a classic work for band, is a setting of three different hymns from the Revolutionary War, originally composed by William Billings. The concert continues with Charles Ives’ Variations on “America,” and closes with a contemporary and very accessible piece Lost Vegas, by American Grammy-Award winning composer Michael Daugherty. Lost Vegas is a tribute to the glitz, glamour, and bustle of the bygone era of “old world” Las Vegas.
