Meet our next summer 2020 resident in the SVAD Studio at Stormwater Studios: Bri Kinard. Bri is a ceramics instructor in the School of Visual Art and Design, who will be with us from July 16 – August 15.
“I think of myself as a mix media artist with a foundation in ceramics though I do not restrict myself to one material during the act of making. I typically let the concept of the work dictate the direction of my material choices. Until recently, I have always prided myself in thinking that I am open-minded to unknown processes and techniques. I have always reassured myself that I am an artist, and I can make art with literally anything I have access to. The events surrounding the ongoing pandemic have opened my eyes to the fact that this has only been a theory in my mind and not a realized fact. When moving my ceramics classes from in-person to online, it dawned on me that I have never actually forced myself to work with what I have. […] I would take on this challenge by working with found objects concerning the emotional spaces represented in a series of personal poems the pandemic has already begun to create in my mind. Through the acts of object construction and the written word, I will bring to life these unseen places, making them tangible for others. In doing so, I hope to help alleviate the emotional power that the pandemic has placed on our society.”
