Shared Traditions: Sacred Music in the South

Day 1–Friday, Feb. 26: From 3:30-5pm meet and greet performance artist Anita Singleton-Prather and the Gullah Kinfolk, and take a curator-led tour of Heard at Every Turn: Traditional Music in South Carolina on 2nd floor of McKissick Museum, Bull & Pendleton Streets, Columbia, SC.

Day 1-Friday, Feb. 26: From 6:30-8:30pm hear Eric Crawford of Coastal Carolina U. talk about “The African-American Spiritual Tradition in the Sea Islands” as a introduction to a performance by Aunt Pearlie Sue and the Gullah Kinfolk of “Circle Unbroken: A Gullah Journey from Africa to America” at the Johnson Performance Hall, Darla Moore School of Business, 1014 Greene Street, Columbia, SC.

Day 2-Saturnday, Feb. 17: From 9am-6:30pm, enjoy a panel discussion of “Vocal Godliness: Gospel in Black and White,” moderated by Birgitta Johnson; a lecture on “The Music of the African-American Camp Meeting” by Minuette Floyd; a keynote by Dr. Cynthia Schmidt on “The Legacy of Song: Gullah Tradition & the TransAtlantic Dialogue”; 3 vocal music workshops and a shape-note program and concert.
